Special Facts: Adam was last seen in Towanda, Kansas sometime during the summer of 1999. Adam was born Irvin Groeninger III and his name was changed when he was adopted.
Known Circumstances:
Adam was in foster care from the age of 2 and was adopted sometime after that by Doug & Valerie Herrman.
Although Adam went missing sometime around May, 1999, no one knows for sure the exact date. According to the adoptive parents, they never reported Adam missing because he had run away from them before and they assumed that he was either homeless or had gone back to his biological parents. Still, they continued to collect his adoption subsidy payments (approximately $700 per month) until his 18th birthday.
One of the Herrman's daughters brought attention to the fact that Adam was missing. She went to the Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services in late 2008 to see if she could locate him because she believed, along with other family members, that he had been returned to the state at age 11. Doug and Valerie had also told the family that Adam had been placed in the state mental hospital. Other family members recall watching Valerie Herrman physically abuse Adam.
No charges have been filed in Adam's disappearance, but the Herrman's have been named as suspects and could possibly be charged with murder, even if Adam's remains are never found. They could also face charges that include alleged abuse, failing to report him missing, and for continuing to accept money after his disappearance. Police have searched the home where the Herrmans used to live along with their current residence. This many years later, investigators can find no evidence that Adam could still be alive.
